'night, Mother

'night, Mother是1983年普立茲獎戲劇類得主，不分場，一口氣real time演完，開場時劇中時間是晚上八點十五分，在十點前結束。人物只有一對母女，女兒Jessie決定在這一夜結束自己生命，她已經籌備許久，將身後事一一打點，甚至告訴母親她將要自殺，以便讓母親有機會了解為什麼她要自殺。母親的反應當然是想要阻止，於是在這不到兩小時的時間之內，母女倆就在微妙的心情下做了最後一次的交談。劇名'night, Mother（晚安，媽媽）是Jessie自己設定的人生中最後一句話，彷彿一切如常。

這個劇本似乎通常是以女性主義和disability、otherness、depression為關鍵字來閱讀，因為Jessie患有癲癇(physical disability)，同時顯然十分憂鬱(mental disability)，因為將被他者化、奇異化的身體做為女性被壓迫的象徵是常見的比喻；但是相反的被他者化、奇異化的身體本身也是受到壓迫的，因此這種辯證不太穩定甚至有內在矛盾。我自己是比較傾向將本劇重點放在精神分析比較安全。
